Rapunzel Tower Cake, Inspired by the Disney movie Tangled
This was definitely my most challenging cake to date. A good friend asked if I could make a cake for his friend’s daughter’s birthday, and she loves the movie Tangled. He wanted the tower, and I immediately knew this would be a tricky cake. I’m really happy with the way it turned out, and I can honestly say I put more than 40 hours into this very detailed cake.
I started out at Target, in the kid’s book section. I found a “Read-Aloud Storybook” with a bonus insert poster of the tower! Jackpot! Then it was on to Home Depot for some hardware… a large wooden base, pipe, flanges. The cake center is chocolate with chocolate frosting. The pipe is covered in cereal treats and that is covered with modeling chocolate. The roof is also formed cereal treats, and then decorated with hundreds of tiny tiles. All of the decoration is made from gum paste and fondant. I then hand painted the piece, and piped the greenery and flowers.
This cake really challenged me and got me out of my comfort zone. I’m glad I did it… and I’m glad it’s done! And the little girl that it went to absolutely went crazy over it… that’s what it’s all about.

LOve it Love it!!! Are you sharing any more detailed information like what size pipes, cakes pans etc. ?
Hi Diana… how did the cake turn out? I would love to see pics! Please post on my Facebook page if you have any… http://www.facebook.com/cakephoria. Thanks again!
Oh my goodness this is truely the most amazing cake I’ve ever seen! My daughter wants a Rapunzel tower cake for her 4th birthday and I came online for inspiration. The most adventurous I’ve ever been with a cake is making Lego bricks, I can honestly say I shan’t be showcasing my poor example. If I ever make it that is!
Thank you Lucy! This was a fun cake, but it was definitely a challenge! I would love to see your version… I’ve had a few requests for tips and help recreating it, and I am very happy to help any one who would like to tackle it! Please visit my Facebook page, http://www.facebook.com/cakephoria, and post a pic if you do recreate it. Thank you!
This might be a rookie question, but how do you attach the pipe to the wooden disc? Thanks!
Hi Michelle… you will need to attach the pipe to the base with a flange… you can pick it up at a hardware store, and they can also makes sure you have the correct size pipe that goes with it. I used a 1″ pipe that was a foot long, and used 1″ flanges. You screw the flange to the board, and there’s a hole in the center where the pipe threads into it… Just make sure you buy threaded pipe. If you have any questions, just ask the workers at the hardware store. Thanks for your question!
How did you attach the house to the tower? Did you have a flange on the top of the pipe as well to hold up the house? Or did you just sit the cake with a board on top of the pipe?
Heather, I did use a flange at the top as well… and that was connected to a melamine plate, which I predrilled some holes for the screws. You could also use a smaller wooden platform, I just didn’t have one handy, or a saw to cut one.
